I think it is important for me to explain what The Lesser Me blog is all about in order for you to understand my purpose and desire for you, as my reader. I had been praying for about 2 years for God to reveal to me what he wanted me to do in His kingdom by using the gifts He has blessed me with. One day during my prayer time, He revealed to me how prideful and arrogant I truly was. He began to lovingly dissolve my ego. This has been an ongoing process since that day. He showed my mind’s eye that when I offer myself to Him, He replaces me with His fullness through the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. That image has been engraved into my heart since. Soon after, God started prompting me to write and paint. I was obedient, even at 2am sometimes, I would sit straight up and start writing on whatever paper I could find near my nightstand. God continued to reveal to me through prayer that The Lesser Me was the name of whatever ministry He was going to point me towards.
There was a pruning time, when I thought God was showing me what the The Lesser Me was all about, but in reality he was showing me areas of my life that needed pruning and shaping before he could reveal to me the big picture of what The Lesser Me was truly about. He knew exactly what needed to be taught and applied to my life before I would fully understand and grasp the name that He had put on my heart years ago. Loving The Real Me (my next blog) goes into more detail about this pruning and shaping process. God had to reveal my selfishness in order for me to rid myself of my pride and ego! When looking back, I realize that it was God pruning me of my self image. God had to do a lot more pruning before I realized that the deeper meaning of The Lesser Me stems from John 3:30 which says, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” I would like to take a closer look with you at that passage in John chapter 3, which explains this concept much better than I ever could.
In John chapter three, John the baptist and his disciples were in Aenon near Salim baptizing a group of people, when the disciples and a Jew began to argue about purification. This argument brought them to John the baptist for reasoning. During this conversation with John, they expressed concern about the people that were beginning to leave John’s following to join Jesus’ following at the Jordan river. They were doing this to be baptized by Jesus instead of John.
John’s response to their concern was the foundation of what I want The Lesser Me to hold true to.
- In verse 27, John replied “No one can receive anything unless it is given to him from heaven.”
John understood that all good things things come from the Father, and John was truly grateful for the coming of Christ! In fact, John made it very clear from the beginning of his ministry that his purpose was to lead others to Christ, and point the way to the coming messiah. John, at this point in time had met Jesus, and even baptized Jesus. He knew Jesus was the son of God and was joyful to hear people were following Jesus instead of him.
- John then says in verse 28, “I am not the messiah, but sent ahead of Him…”
John’s ministry had pointed others to Jesus from the beginning. Matthew 3:3 is a testament to this saying, “For he is the one spoken of through the prophet Isaiah (Old Testament prophesy) who said, “A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord; make His paths straight!” John’s ministry had been a prophecy through Isaiah from before his time. His mission was to prepare the hearts of men before the coming of Christ. And that is exactly what John had been doing.
In Matthew 3:11, we see John saying, “I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove His sandals.”
John understood who Jesus was, he believed in His divinity and humanity, His purpose here on earth was truly to save His people from their own sin. John knew how little he truly was in the presence of Jesus. This is apparent in Matthew 3:13-17 where Jesus asked John to baptize him, John’s response was, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me.” In which Jesus replies, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John was obedient to Christ, and baptized him and we see that immediately the heavens were opened and the trinity made it’s only appearance on earth. I guarantee John the baptist was a true believer, and had faith in Jesus from that moment on… if ever it had wavered before… never again.
- John then says in verse 29, “He who has the bride is the groom. But the groom’s friend who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. So this joy of mine is complete.”
John is calling Jesus the groom, giving him full support in his marriage to the bride (his people). John understood that he was Jesus’ helper, to be His advocate while here on earth. John had to give Jesus center stage, as the groom in order to be the best man. John knew that in order to grow the kingdom on earth, he must lose popularity and fame, and in turn Jesus must gain it!
So, what was John really saying to this group of disciples and the Jew who were arguing that day? He was pointing the big picture out to them. He made it clear to them that he was joyful in hearing that the whole purpose of his ministry was now being fulfilled through Jesus, the son of God! I am sure in that moment John was bubbling over inside with the knowledge that others were now starting to see what he had already seen in Christ.
I want so much for God to use me in His kingdom before the coming of Christ. My prayer has been for years, God, use me up! Give me the resources and knowledge that I need to speak to others about your love and spread the gospel to all nations as Jesus commanded me to do. God made it abundantly clear to me that I needed to humble myself and become less before Christ to allow the room Christ needs in me to be great! Then he could fill me up with His love and wisdom so I could accurately share the gospel with you. So this is what I have been striving for, pruning myself through God’s word and the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Today I am so excited to begin to share with you my personal walk with God. My hope is that you will see how imperfect I am, yet still see Christ shine through me. We are all in need of a savior! God’s love is so amazing shown by His grace and mercy on us through the death and resurrection of Christ. My end goal in this blog is for Christ to have victory over me!
When coming up with my logo design, I started researching what imagery I wanted to add to The Lesser Me words. I hoped that every time I looked at the logo, I would be motivated to continue to serve in His kingdom with my end goal in mind. The palm leaf in scripture represents victory. And my end goal is for Christ to have victory over me. When I found this out, I put it all together with a gold ring which represents all things leading back to Christ. Because it is only when I am in Christ that through Christ victory can be acheived over me!
